I have a discussion topic for anyone willing to go there. This is a relevant topic to most of you, and one that really fascinates me. There are a number of failing orchestras, and it is a shame, especially for the people whose jobs are in jeopardy. Let us take ourselves out of the job market concern for the time being. If you have time to kill, I have a few questions: 1. If an orchestra is having trouble getting enough funding from performances/advertising/endowments, is it deserving of continued life? Why? 2. In the past few years, we have gained a completely unprecedented access to recordings. All of the standard rep that you used to have to go see live is readily available through so many disparate means, and there are typically several hundred recordings of each piece of standard rep. What do orchestras need to do/what are they doing to combat this? 3. What is your opinion of orchestral tradition? By this, I mean the tradition that solidified around the beginning of the 20th century with Mahler and Schoenberg. This can involve subjects such as conduct, attire (both audience and performer), or whatever you are interested in. Id be very interested in responses from people at all levels of their careers.
