I have a lot to say about this. But for now, heres my two cents, in brief. Sure, I respect the apology, and the courage to come out and admit a mistake so openly. That is something. Especially in a culture that doesnt appreciate apology or self-criticism. However, in my opinion, plagiarism is not a mistake that you apologise for. Not in media. Not in this industry. Its a mistake that you pay a price for, regardless of your good intentions, either in integrity or if youre a small journalist, in job loss or penalty. And I for one am glad that Bassem has gone out and said hell stop writing and that hell accept the mass flogging and the blame. He said it eloquently so no need for a repeat. Go read his extended apology if you missed it. He said he had no excuse, and I agree with him. It is very much inexcusable, that much is very true. And I would lay off too. Let me add, from a loving place as well, that I also believe that his last apology shouldve been his first response. But hey, we all mess up sometimes. And this is pretty bad, sure. The friend and fan part of me wants to forgive it, but another part of me knows better than to slip it under the rug and move on so quickly. Again, in journalism speak, this is pretty big. But Im just glad that hes owning up to it all. And doing something about it. Something I can get behind and support. Separately, does this forfeit the integrity of his show? Not for me, no. I dont think so. Its a different medium, and a different story. So far, the production of the show is intact and I still respect his work and art tremendously, this last incident notwithstanding. Friendship aside, Im still a big fan of the show. And I wish him and his team all my best.
