I have a question. If you know your horse is going to spook badly - TopicsExpress

I have a question. If you know your horse is going to spook badly over something, and its safe to get off before the spook, is it alright to get off of them and handle them from the ground? I saw/heard a horse and carriage coming up the road towards us on Saturday. It was making a lot of noise. I didnt know if my horse had ever seen a horse and carriage before; so I decided to get off of him before he saw them. I am so glad I did. The carriage driver stopped and then passed up very carefully, but my horse came completely unglued. I had a hard time calming him down and keeping him under control, but I think I would have been thrown if I stayed on him. As it was, he tossed his head and hit me in the chin. I got a nice bloody lip and scraped chin from it. A couple of days later we were riding in the same area and he caught sight of a man and bicycle in the distance. I felt him tense up and prepare for flight. I got off of him again. The bike went a different way. My horse was upset for a few minutes, but I walked him out of it and then got back on him to finish the ride. Normal spooks I have no problem staying on him. Its just when I think he might blow up that Id rather be on the ground then on his back. I am very afraid of being thrown. I dont want to get hurt or so scared that I wont ride anymore. Ive only had my horse for 5 months. We are still learning to be a team and trust each other. I would like to be able to ride him for the next 20 years. Thank you for listening.
