I have a question for you at the bottom of this one. NDP MP - TopicsExpress

I have a question for you at the bottom of this one. NDP MP Craig Scott has been doing a lot of work on electoral reform ahead of the upcoming 2015 election. In consultation with Canadians hes been asking participants to rank the criteria they think are most important in determining whether an electoral system is good for Canada. Here are the elements that ranked highest (top 7 out of 15 choices): - Fairness in the sense of proportionality (number of seats in the House of Commons reflecting a party’s percentage of the popular vote) - Direct election of an MP for each constituency - Ability of voters to exercise choice (e.g. a voter can vote for a local MP of one party and cast a separate vote for another party) - A system that promotes more consensual, cooperative and cross-party law-making - Beneficial impact on voter turnout and on increasing citizen engagement - Simplicity of the ballot, producing ease of voting for the voter - Voter knowledge about contending candidates and parties in advance of voting Now Im looking for your input. What do you think would help improve our electoral system? What are the needs, challenges and potential solutions in your opinion?
