I have always been inspired by the fact that, towards the end of WWI, there were incidents of battlefield soldiers fraternizing with the enemy. These incidents are given a lot less weight in the History books than various battles, treaty signings, and regime changes, but to me they are more significant. Battles, treaty signings, and regime changes are just business as usual, whereas such fraternizing is a rejection of the whole nationalist paradigm. Yes, they were in a sense tiny events, but that makes them a tiny spark of light in the enveloping darkness. They give me hope that our species can overcome the self-destructive behavior pattern known as war.
