I have always been on the no censorship bandwagon in terms of what we put into childrens literature. I do, however, think that both publishers and authors have a responsibility to publish work which benefits society as a whole. If _And Tango Makes Three_ can be banned for promoting gay lifestyles, and Captain Underpants is the most objectionable book series again for 2013 because it promotes violence, it really makes me rethink my position on the idea of literary folks responsibility to promote age-appropriate material. I think this is less an issue of age and one of indoctrination that pushes the pro-gun agenda on minds that our legal system agrees cannot comprehend the weight of a decision to murder and therefore tries them on a separate set of rules. While I can concede that children are exposed to violence already, especially through movies and video games, I find it particularly reprehensible to teach kids to scan their surroundings for targets they can potentially draw down on. I feel like this can create an aspiration to violence in youth, and it normalizes the power behind a handgun to the same level as Winnie the Pooh getting his head caught in a hunny jar.
