I have an announcement: I started the Support for BC Teachers - TopicsExpress

I have an announcement: I started the Support for BC Teachers page because I wanted to ensure there was a loud and active social media presence in support of teachers and a fully-funded public education system. In less than two months my little page has grown to over 15,200 members, and through my work here I have been able to advocate for public education on television, radio, print media, and in person at rallies in Victoria and Vancouver. It has become clear to me through this process that there is a real need for progressive voices on our school boards. Many times I have heard the question, Where are the Trustees? I have come to understand that some Trustees are working tirelessly to advocate for the children in their district who are being short-changed by chronic underfunding, whereas other Trustees seem more content to take a passive approach. Still other Trustees have had the audacity to approve raises for themselves while the teachers in their districts are walking the picket line apparently outside the affordability zone. Through my research in my own district, SD61, I have learned that the progressive Trustees (Diane McNally, Edith Loring-Kuhanga, Deborah Nohr, and Catherine Alpha) are in a minority and have their hands tied. The board NEEDS a progressive majority to do anything, and in order to get a majority they need other strong candidates to run for election November 15, 2014. After much reflection and encouragement, I have decided to step up to the plate and bring my tenacity and passion for public education to the next level by fighting for a spot on the SD61 school board. I know that in order to be successful I am going to need a lot of support from the community. I am hoping that those who share my passion and who believe in me as a strong voice for students and public education will join me on my new page (linked below) to workshop ideas, build strategy, and collaborate with me on all aspects of my campaign. This is going to be grassroots all the way, and I am going to need a team. Community building through social media is my strength. YOU are my strength. Together we can make this happen.
