I have another story of true friendship, loyalty, determination, and love of one little very brave little girl. I had a parakeet - Pete. He was cute and my Mom would sing the old soft shoe to him, and he would dance back and forth on his bar. He could also say See Pete. I was showing my little girlfriend my beautiful blue parakeet, and I was showing off, taking him out of the cage outside! Well of course Pete got away. I ran to my Mom crying and she angry. Valerie - my little friend ran off. Mom and I searched for the bird for a long time. I was just bawling the whole time. We finally brought the empty cage inside and it was so sad. About an hour or so later, there was a strange knock on the door. We opened the door and there stood Valerie holding that bird tightly in her two little hands. I am talking, this girl was little-like 5 or 6. We were the same age. My Mom came running absolutely astounded. She scooped up the bird and put him in the cage. We looked at her hands and Pete had pecked holes in both of her thumbs. As my Mom was fixing up her bloody badly pecked thumbs she asked her, how did you do this honey? She said she climbed a bunch of trees, but he kept flying away. Finally, she grabbed him high in a tree and didnt let go. She was a red head. And I will never forget you Valerie Berryhill. That bird lived for years. If anyone knows where Valerie is today, I would love to talk to her. I believe she lived on Perth street.
