I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8) In todays Gospel john the Baptist highlights this crucial difference between Jesus and himself. Jesus tells us elsewhere that the best gift that we can aspire to is the Holy Spirit and the God like a loving Father wants us to receive this gift. After receiving it, all that is good will follow, such as wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude and knowledge. John the baptist tells us exactly how we can get this gift - he simply points to Jesus (Mk 1:7). Indeed, all we have to do is follow Jesus and he will baptize us in the Spirit. I will follow Jesus to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and so become a changed person.
