I have been Scheduled to report to Salinas Court Jury Duty on Monday, May 19th. I am afraid! Do you want to know why? Well, even if you dont, here goes. ....... Sometime in the late 80s , I was called to the Supreme Court of Alameda County in Oakland , California. I went like every civic minded individual to do my duty . Here is what happened . And I will try to make this the Readers Digest Abbreviated version. I got picked.! I went into the court room for jury selection, and they had the first 6 rows blocked off. We had to sit in the back. There was a rumble coming from the hallway----a sort of shaking of the building. ........ In came the defendant. His wrists and ankles were shackled with metal cuffs! He was A GIANT OF A MAN , and he made a point to look at us all in the eye! . In the course of just TRYING TO PICK a jury , he .............. spit on his lawyer---spit across the room at his prosecutor, turned around and spit at us ALL! He had memorized and recited the prosecutors and judges home addresses and directions to their homes. He kicked the extremely heavy wooden table in front of him (with shackled feet) up to hit the court reporter and her desk!!!!!!!!! ........ this was a form of terrorism before that was a thing! ........ Thankfully to God and the Jury system---after a terrifying lunch break where everyone was stunned--------we came back to a judgement that we should all be let to go home and relieved of this jury . Do I think this might happen again? No. But , it does not enhance my desire to go my civic duty again. Salinas Supreme Court---here I come! this time with tissues and a chill pill!
