I have been a member of a Public Program Advisory Group at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in conjunction with two important exhibitions at the de Young, The Gay Essay: Photographs by Anthony Friedkin, (closed in October) and Keith Haring: The Political Line, through–February 8, 2015. This exhibition provides audiences with a distinctive overview of Haring’s work and the first serious analysis of his oeuvre from both an art historical and political point of view. Haring’s graphics, paintings, drawings, sculptures and public commissions often address issues of social justice and change. He took pleasure in transgressing accepted norms of behavior and expression, and his works unapologetically denounce racism, capitalism, the evils of dictatorship, the perils of atomic war, the destruction of the environment, and the tyranny of the mass media. Haring also cared deeply about children’s health, the fight against drug addiction. He fought tirelessly to end the AIDS epidemic. In 1988, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS. By the time of his death in 1990, at the age of thirty-two, he had achieved international fame. His influence on his own generation and those that have followed is a testament to his enduring vision. If you have not already seen this exhibition, I encourage you to do so. More information on the exhibition and how to purchase tickets and the catalogue are below. I had the pleasure of viewing this extraordinary body of work before it opened to the public and plan to return. There is much to take in and not all of Harings imagery is apparent on first look. In fact, one often needs to step back in order to discern the underlying layers, complexity of his visual coding and his sheer ingenious approach to conveying his messages. Heres one of many rave articles on this must see exhibit. 7x7/culture/80s-icon-and-art-world-darling-keith-haring-display-de-young-museum?utm_source=Fine+Arts+Museums+of+San+Francisco+E-Mail+List&utm_campaign=2d58e70f74-11_25_Haring_Press_e_mail11_25_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9757c5111b-2d58e70f74-#/0 For more info and to buy tickets see deyoung.famsf.org/haring.
