I have been asked by a few people how Hawaii is. Here are some thoughts, feel free to chime in. For North Americans and Europeans, this is the closest they get to the South Pacific tropics and thus the islands are a gorgeous attractant. For Japanese it is a comfortable escape for romance, golf and a trip to America. Once outside of Honolulus beach suburb Waikiki on Oahu, there are distinctive features on each of the 5 large islands that appeal to luxury resort people (Maui), rain forest trampers (Kaui), agricultural enthusiasts (Kona), loners (Lanai and Molokai) and thus everyone gets something they like. For people from New Zealand, who have easy access to the Pacific Islands for a few hundred dollars air fare, the attraction is more the mystique, having been there at least once, than the features, in addition to the constantly fine weather while we suffer through our Winter... The beaches in NZ and on Fiji, Cooks, Samoa and Tonga are better, larger and less crowded. Our wines are better. Our night-life is non-existent when compared to Waikiki, which is a combination of a small Manhattan and the tropics. The shopping in Hawaii is superb, from the high-priced unique speciality shops to the Ala Moana 3-level shopping center for discounted stuff of all kind. I would do it once, and then probably save the extra cost to travel to Hawaii and the higher cost for accommodation and instead travel along the Pacific Islands, including Australias East Coast and Malaysias beaches. So there!
