I have been asked by friends and clients about speeding up their laptops or older desktop PCs. While backing up user files and reloading the operating system, or better yet, doing a clean upgrade to a newer version of Windows can do wonders for performance, I often recommend to them that if their hardware is more than five years old, its time to replace it. The technology has advanced quite a bit and the power you get for the price you pay is very reasonable. Considering the price you would pay to have someone back up your data, purchase a new version of Windows and reload your old system, purchasing a new computer is not that much more in most cases. And the new operating systems have tools that make migrating your files to your new computer fairly easy. Regardless, I do recommend weekly backups, or better yet, cloud backups. And a yearly reload of the whole system. Most computers have a system recovery partition that makes this process relatively painless and the performance boost is worth the time.
