I have been avoiding posting this accident, but I think things are really on the mend, so here is what happened. I was asked to do am chores, so I go over to the barn, and as I was driving up the driveway, I noticed one of the mares was laying down. When I got up to the barn, Missy came running toward me, then turned around and went back the other way! I noticed the mare I saw down did not come over, as she usually does! So I go walking around the back of the barn to see a horrible sight! The mare was hanging by her ankle at the top of the round pen panels! She was flat on her side! I thought she was dead! I yelled her name and she lifted her head a little and nickered at me. I knew I needed help, so I called my husband and screamed at him to get to the barn ASAP!! He was there in mock speed! (Thank God!) we then took panels apart so we could release her, then she just didnt move. I called Mara, who ran over in her all time fastest run! Bill happened to drive up at that time too! Between the four of us, we got her up! I thought her leg was broke, Tom grabbed her leg, I grabbed her ankle and pulled! It made that pop noise! It was back in!! I then wrapped it really heavy till the vet arrived! (Also gave her some med for pain) she drank lots of water, slowly! Our great Vet arrived and did x-Rays, NO BREAK!!! She was then splinted and between 6 of us, she was guilded into her stall. She was not left alone for 72 hours! In case of colic or the many other things they can get after that trauma! She is a great mare and is doing awesome. We are starting to take her on 10 min walks now, and she has done great! I am scared of taking the last splint off, and I know she will be on stall rest for at least 4 more months! Has anyone else had something like that happen? What were the results? Any suggestions? I will post photos later! Sorry for such a long post! This happened Dec 1st.
