I have been dreading this day for many months but it is important that you all know our stubborn, irascible, wry, talented, brilliant teacher quietly retreated to the back court physically but his humor and biting wit never left him. His ever present shadow shall shine brightly on all the Stadium Courts of the game. Welbys Wall in Indian Wells, CA that his protege and devoted friend, Charlie Passarell, erected in his honor stands as a testament to the many who were privileged to hear those words BALANCE, GRIP, STROKE, STRATEGY Welby was truly ONE OF A KIND and I shall miss him terribly and shall bless the day I was taken kicking and screaming to Court #1 at The Caribe Hilton Hotel. It and the Camp at Choate became a welcome sanctuary for my kids Liz, David and Judy. Those days and that journey has been remarkable and shall reside in our hearts always. I have been honored by the many years he called me Friend. The iconic jacket that within its fabric and design lies treasured memories of not only a wonderful time in our lives but the beginning of an extraordinary friendship of almost 50 years. It began in San Juan, PR and circled almost every road our family traveled. Tennis and Life began on those courts, sometimes interrupted by adversity and sadness but always providing such joy. Welby has shaped those distinguishable strokes that Bruce Bruce W Regan mentioned and so much more. You will be pleased to know that the sometimes loner mentality that Welby showed to the world was smart enough these past few years to seek and share the comforting and loving arms of his sons Stuart & Bryce who were very mindful of not only his needs but of his personality. My dear friend has given us a time in our lives when we gathered daily to not only learn the game of tennis but in that process, we learned the game of life with all its glory, frustration and complexities.....
