I have been dreading this moment purely for the fact that I was intimidated by the lists my friends had been posting. A lot of those books I picked up but could never finish. Seriously who can endure James Joyces 933 page Ulysses touted as the greatest novel of the century. I have it in my library since 2001. However, I had no qualms reading and rereading Vikram Seths 1474 page A Suitable Boy, eventhough I was cautioned: Buy me before good sense insists, Youll strain your purse and sprain your wrists. After being nominated by Meher Khan, Zahra Majid and Farhat Ahmed I finally decided its time to share my list. Here is my list of 10 books that have influenced me and helped me in becoming who I am: 1- Catch 22 by Joseph Heller 2- To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee 3- The Anthem by Ayn Rand 4- The Woman Who Went To Bed For A Year by Sue Townsend 5- Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee 6- The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga 7- Complete works of Oscar Wilde 8- After The Prophet by Lesley Hazleton (A must read if you want to understand the Shia-Sunni split in Islam) 9- Nancy Drew Series by Carolyn Keene (This was the beginning of my long love affair with the world of sleuthing. If you are interested in this genre you shouldnt escape the charms of Archie Goodwin and must familiarise yourself with the works of Rex Stout) 10- And lastly where would I be without the poetry of Faiz, Iqbal and Rumi giving me solace, hope and inspiration over the years. I now nominate Sofia Hamdani Checa, Izzah Akram, Nadine Ahmed, Kishwar Sameen Gulzar, Omaira Gill, Mona Shaikh, Pragya Batra Sehgal.
