I have been involved in an offline debate via messenger regarding something I said. Here is what I said: You have the Right to Buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, F, K, or L. Do not look at Plans G & N because you cant buy them per Medicare rules. If you read the page at medicare.gov/find-a-plan/staticpages/learn/rights-and-protections.aspx it concerns Medigap Protections and Right to Buy. It defines your Medigap rights based on federal law. So there is no debate about if the data on the page is correct because it is law. Where there is debate is my statement because you cant buy them. According to 3 insurance agents you can buy them but you will have to qualify by passing medical underwriting. So what is the true meaning of Medigap Protections and Right to Buy? Maybe cant is not the correct word and shouldnt is. From the beginning I have interpreted this as a prohibition from buying Plans G & N. What if it really means you can but you shouldnt? In the past and now in 2014 we have the AT&T plan and it renews every year without regard to our health. Medigap is giving us the ability and right to go to a new plan without regard to our health in 2015 or the future. That makes for a smooth transition and there is no fear of loss of healthcare coverage. If you buy a Plan G OR N you are making a conscious decision that in 2015 and every year thereafter you will have to qualify by passing medical underwriting. In the end you are protected from buying Plans G & N. The protections are there for a reason, ignore them at your own risk. On another group I was accused of being over zealous because of my preexisting conditions. I reject that outright and would like to think I am zealous because I dont want a fellow retiree to make a mistake in 2015 that will hurt them later.
