I have been involved in no less than 10 conversations about the issue with children captured at the border. None of them began with the other individual having an understanding that the issue is that the children are being held not that they are wandering free in the US. Once that gets established you can realize that the argument isnt about tighter security at the border. Next I hear frequently that we should take care of all of our own kids first. Tip-toeing around the fact that we are a nation built on 1-the understanding that we welcome refugees an 2-we are a Christian based culture and Christ asks us to care for the poor, I asked instead if they were willing to raise taxes or find funding in some other equitable fashion so that we could indeed take care of our own children. That received a resounding NO every time. So I want to take care of my own kids, but I dont want to pay for it and I dont want to take care of other kids who are facing death upon deportation. But I want to make sure birth control isnt handed out because that offends my religious beliefs. My head gets dizzy.
