I have been making Sugar Cakes for a long, long time, my cookie jars were always filled with sweet confections when I had my family here. To make rolled out ones, I do not use a recipe, I just go by instinct, putting ingredients in a bowl and know they will turn out just fine. But sometimes, I want to make these dropped cookies according to a recipe and they turn out just delicious. SUGAR CAKES 1/2 cup oleo 1/2 cup shortening 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. vanilla 4 cups flour 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1 cup buttermilk In a bowl, cream shortening, oleo, sugar and eggs, beat well, add vanilla, add soda to buttermilk, add remaining dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Drop by tablespoon onto a cookie sheet. Sprinkle tops with sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
