I have been meaning to write this post since Indias 68th Independence Day. For I do believe this year its more significant than any other year. Its time for us to stop chasing the ghosts of our past. Embrace Modi for starters. Despite my initial misgivings I like what I am seeing so far. I appreciate him addressing rape, gender discrimination and communal violence in his speech at the Red Ford on Aug 15th as a small example. The Congress era in reality ended with Indira Ghandhi. Because here is the realization I have come to after this deeply thought provoking trip to India this summer. We tend to confuse our intensely rich heritage and history (unlike any other country) with a deep sense of culture. And in doing so we cling to the ghosts of an era that no longer exists, never existed in many parts of the homeland. Our youth struggle with a lack of responsibility, a sense of entitlement, more so as a result of high unemployment rates. Our boys and men dont understand chivalry whether its on the sidewalks of a village or in the high end lounges of a hotels. Our women are in danger every time they venture outside there homes. Our families are fragile, held together by bonds that are just easily torn apart by words and money. So lets stop throwing a veil on our cultural hierarchy. We dont have any in the global world. Lets face that reality. The land of the Taj Mahal can come into the future. Where economic, infrastructure and anti- corruption recovery is just as critical as cultural recovery. Lets stop chasing the ghosts of our pasts into what the culture of India should be and strive to make it what it can be in the modern world. Jai Hind !
