I have been nominated by Jeremy Hay to do a 5-day song challenge - TopicsExpress

I have been nominated by Jeremy Hay to do a 5-day song challenge wherein I list a song each day that has some special meaning to me. Im starting things off with Thomas Dolbys One Of Our Submarines. Thomas Dolby has always been one of my top synth heros. To start with he built his own first synthesizer (A DIY Transcendent 2000), just as I did (mine was a much more basic synth based around a TI SN76477N chip). And he glamorised the science geek image. And he made great songs - hes a real storyteller. The Golden Age Of Wireless was the first album I owned. I used to play the LP at home at obscene volumes with a very understanding family on my old stereogram, and every now and then one of the stereo channels would stop working and Id have to pull apart the stylus assembly and fix the dicky wiring. Thomas Dolbys music used the stereo field to effect, so only one channel working wasnt satisfactory :) . Here is the video that played on an old NZ music show called Radio With Pictures - this is the version that got me hooked. Its a bit rough but I still prefer the synth lead here to the version on the studio album. This is from 82, and I think its still a classic track ... youtube/watch?v=NuC8fQNLd3Q
