I have been nominated by the bard of Norway, Mr Andreas Dahl to list the ten books that have made the greatest impression on me as I have gone through my life from an earlier post by Mr Derek Dick. I hope you like my list: I would also like to nominate Shazza Denton, Lisa Harper Dixon, Ian D.Hall and Donna Kelford to produce their lists! 1. The Greek mythologies as read to me (and my class) at Marcham Primary school by Mr Davies. This is where my love and interest in all history stems from. 2. Biggles Flies Again - Capt.W.E.Johns. Ok, looking back, there are very many moral issues but as a boys own adventure, does it get any better? 3. Tintin in America - Herge. My first Tintin book, and again, losing yourself in a world of adventure, led to a lifetime fascination with the Belgian Boy reporter. 4. The Cruel Sea - Nicholas Monserrat. My first proper grown up book given to me by my dad. 5. Waterland - Graham Swift. A mesmerising and slow moving story of bleakness and morbidity set in the fen country. Beautifully written and an A level text that Ive come back to in recent times. 6. North - Seamus Heaney. Everyone has to have some poetry in their lives and this again was an A level text that I fell in love with. A Constable Calls is an amazing work. 7. Rivethead - Ben Hamper. I found out about this guy through a Robbie Coltrane programme a few years back. Hamper writes with amazing candour, but also rawness, about the time he spent working on the GM truck line in Flint, Michigan. Hes the guy that inspired Michael Moore. 8. Sons & Lovers - D.H.Lawrence. My one classic Lawrence writes with great sadness, but also with fantastic appreciation of the natural world in which he finds himself. 9. The Border Trilogy - Cormac McCarthy. I may be heretical in my view, but I think Kerouac, Steinbeck and Thompson, as great writers as they are, have now been surpassed as the voice of America by McCarthy. This guys books will just live with you forever. The Crossing has to be the most evocative and emotional book I have ever read. 10. 131 A Time Shifting, Gnostic, Hooligan Road Novel - Julian Cope. This is the best thing I have read this year, and I know it will stay with me as the other 9 books have. Amazing.
