I have been researching the Lafourche Parish web site and have read past school board minutes. I am puzzled by the recent increase in the salary of the current superintendent. The board voted unanimously to increase Mrs. Mathews salary by $32,000 per year to an annual salary of $220,000 plus benefits. This is more than any superintendent in our surrounding area makes and Lafourche has fewer schools, fewer students, and a lower tax base than neighboring parishes. Maybe someone can help me understand how 15 board members all agreed that this was necessary when a teacher with a doctorate degree and 25 years experience earns a base pay of $55,000 per year. I am not saying that our superintendent doesnt deserve this pay, I am just saying that this parish is not able to pay people what they deserve. I do not like being in the dark on any issues and I do believe the people of this parish were blindsided by this increase. I realize that I have much to learn about Lafourche schools and the operation of the board, but I can assure the constituents of District 7 that I am doing my best to study the issues and when I disagree, I am not shy about letting the public know why.
