I have been seeing and hearing many people proclaim that either there should be no gay-marriage rights or that church and state should not be separate. Here are my thoughts: I am not anti-church, and I am not anti-gay marriage. Reason being, one is a religion, and one is a policy. Religion and federal/state policies should not intertwine. You may point out any statistic that you like or that God was mentioned X number of times in the Bill of Rights and that some view this country as a Christian nation, however when you mix church and state there will ALWAYS be an oppressed demographic. Take for instance the Middle East. In America, we criticize Sharia Law as being oppressive towards women (which it is), however that is their religion and women trying to defy men is a sin per their religion. We are currently using that same metric in the U.S. (maybe not to the same degree), just in a different context. Per what many Americans say, that we should use Christian faith to dictate our policies, then why are we opposed to Iran or Afghanistan doing the same thing? In no way am I defending those countries oppressive policies, Im merely pointing out the hypocritical stance many Americans take and why religion should not dictate policies. We cannot pick and choose which rights are appropriate to strip individuals of based off of a religion of the majority.
