I have been thinking about the way our trip went yesterday with the multiple mechanical events on the Delta A-320. It was a series of failures beginning with the low pressure of the bottle tha deploys one of the emergency escape slides. Once repaired after a 5 hour delay, pax were boarded. Shortly after the cabin door was closed, the Captain announced over the P.A. that the starter on the left engine would not function. Maintenance came back and corrected the problem. Next, the air start ground unit failed... Another 2 hours passed before it was fixed. We finally pushed back from the gate at 3:15PM! (7:15 late.). The flight to SLC was smooth and I eventful. I watched the Delta gate personnel , the Captain, and the Flight Attendants during this long event and I was blown away at the professionalism displayed be each and every one of the staff. The Captain was on site the entire time, made regular announcements both in the gate area and aboard the aircraft. He kept everyone well informed and was very considerate and caring. The gate personnel were professional and helpful with rebooking pax as each connection slipped away with the ongoing delay at the gate. The passengers were understandably frustrated with the delay, but due to the way the staff handled the situation, their were no raised voices or outbursts of anger. I want to compliment the entire staff involved for a very good job of making an unbearable situation not so bad!
