I have been trying to really understand the Buddhist concept of essential oneness. Thich Nhat Hanh calls this inter-being and says we inter-are. Many of our greatest scientists now refer to the earth as one organism that contains many interconnected structures. I could follow this concept intellectually, but I wanted to “feel” it. Then, one day, I was looking at white clouds against a blue sky. I realized that, while I appeared to be seeing two separate things, really the clouds are not different from the sky. The clouds are the sky, only in a slightly different configuration. At that moment I felt that same relationship between myself and the earth. I wasn’t separate from the ground I lay upon. I was the earth and the earth was me, only in different configurations.
