I have been very fortunate this summer to have experienced a mostly fine crop of blockbusters at my local cinema. Unfortunately, publicity people still follow the “drill it into their skull,” method of product recall. This is why I have seen the trailer to Prisoners about twenty-eight times. I wish the folk in it all of the success. From what I can tell, it looks like a Father Knows Best Rouge Badass vs. Diabolically Unstoppable Hidden Villain. Plumbing the depths of human nature and the frailty of morality is always entertaining, but usually done poorly. What I want to see is the movie after the movie. Where Hugh Jackman is brought before a court of law and a jury of his peers on the charges of kidnapping, assaulting, torturing and maiming a mentally challenged man-child. In his defense, he had a very good reason to suspect that said person had kidnapped his daughter and was hiding her and another child from all onlookers. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, how do you find the Defendant? This to me is an interesting movie, as I am unable to see the “twist ending” coming from beyond the horizon. Zero Dark Thirty tried to do an interesting bit about how torture is in fact not really all that useful as anything other than show trial material gathering and hopefully frowned upon recreation. But that was only one aspect of the story that they wanted to tell, and I think that vein holds a lot of material for a story all its own. Especially when paired with a victim who is socially, mentally and financially in the bottom twenty percent.
