I have contemplated getting into writing for a long time and finally decided to take the plunge. Over the years I wrote numerous short stories that I never published. I was too busy trying to live my life in the real world. But now I am ready to devote some real effort to writing. I read a lot of articles by writers of all kinds in order to figure out what to write. I read an article by a romance author; in it she said that writers should write what people want to read. I dont read romance novels. However, I thought about this and I think this is good advice. I read a commentary from an historical fiction writer; in it he emphasizes attention to detail. Make sure all the little details of the story are internally consistent and make sense. I have endeavored to think through every detail in my book and make them all fit together. Finally, many have said, write about what you know. I know science and engineering, thus science fiction. I have had a fair amount of experience in a variety of legal matters, thus some of my stuff is also a legal thriller.
