I have experienced forms of police brutality living in NYC most of my life. In the big cities I will venture to say (and probably in smaller towns) the ethnic/race issue is not the ONLY issue to spark police misuse of power. I have witnessed and have been in the middle of police action many times in the NYC and have found them to be rude, brutal and cruel VERBALLY as well as physically. I watched one cop tear apart a homeless WHITE BLONDE BLUE-EYED man on the Staten Island Ferry just for being NEAR HIM! He told him how stupid he was, how he stunk, how he was worthless and every time the man said ANYTHING in defense the cop berated him for talking when he was talking and said it would be worse for him if he continued, the cop THREATENING THE HOMELESS PERSON with physical harm! This was something I had seen AGAIN AND AGAIN, with violence on the part of a cop happening within seconds of a verbal exchange with ALL RACES AND ETHNIC GROUPS. Racial profiling exists and racism exists, but to call all of this just racism is closing your eyes to the reality that cops are all too ready to use their authority as some kind of personal power trip. I was in the Parks Mounted Parks Enforcement as an officer and I watched fellow mounted officers abuse their power. And up on a 16 hand warm blood you have a lot of authority under you! Pay attention! Our police force has much more corruption than Serpico ever exposed!
