I have great respect for Eric Turkington, attorney and former state rep from Falmouth. He declared that the debate is over regarding whether we need a third bridge over the Cape Cod Canal and where it should be located. He supports the twin Sagamore Bridge concept and rejects financing it through a public-private partnership, favoring bonding the project in the traditional way and paying for it with gas tax collections. I say the debate is not over. Why has no one (that Ive heard) argued for simply replacing the two existing bridges with new ones and making some changes to the connections to them, such as a Bourne flyover and a connector road between the mainland side of the Sagamore Bridge and Route 25? The Army Corps of Engineers is on the hook to replace the Bourne and Sagamore bridges someday. This will happen with Federal dollars, meaning our friends in Hawaii and Alaska will pitch in to our project. The replacement bridges would be built next to the existing bridges and traffic would be cut over to the new bridges before dismantling the old ones. The cost of doing it this way would be far less to the state (meaning to Massachusetts taxpayers) than having MassDOT build a third bridge. Why is it that the simplest solution always seems so elusive?
