I have had it with the articles and people on Facebook trying to justify the Charlie Hebdo murders. It annoyed me enough to draw me out of my Facebook hibernation to try having some fun with words! You can read the original text from the Daily Beast link first and then my modifications which appear below in quotations, or, for greater effect, my modifications first and then the original. Here goes. Raping people is wrong. I want to get this out of the way. When a woman is raped, whoever she is, for whatever reason, that is a tragedy and a waste. To forcibly rape someone is the greatest crime imaginable. There is no such thing as behavior or apparel so wanton or slutty it somehow “justifies” or “legitimizes” rape. The right to dress and act how one wants to—that’s a universal. The fear of rape should not determine how a woman dresses, how she acts, or where she goes. In an ideal world that simply would not be a consideration because rape would not be allowed to occur—in the imperfect world we live in, women should strive for the standard of knowing that how they dress and act might provoke a man to rape them but going about their lives as though the threat did not exist. That is the essence of the virtue we call “courage; Yesterdays rape victim displayed it and should be honored for possessing it. Okay, is that established? I am assuming this is basic common ground for everyone in this conversation, and anyone who disagrees should simply be excluded from it. (And deliberately dragging someone who does disagree into the conversation, as USA Today did, is at best counterproductive and at worst looks like the worst kind of clickbaiting.) Because if we’re all agreed on that: Yesterdays rape victim was also a slut and a whore and people need to stop celebrating her and making her out to be a martyr. See what I did there?
