I have long been fascinated by propaganda and how people are controlled by it. Whether in the form of news, marketing, or entertainment there is always an agenda. Regardless of our perception of him, Joseph Goebbels understood the psyche of the masses and how to force outcomes. Goebbels was an adept observer and we may as well say social psychologist. His chameleon mind knew the type and degree of rhetoric to apply to specific audiences for maximum utility. I believe everyone not behind the proverbial curtain is susceptible to manipulation, while the relative ignorant, lovers of popular culture, and those with great emotional need for affiliation being the easiest targets. Paraphrasing Goebbels, the media is the piano on which the government plays. Perhaps nobody has played that instrument with such originality. To attract people, to win over people to that which I have realized as being true, that is called propaganda. In the beginning there is the understanding, this understanding uses propaganda as a tool to find those men, that shall turn understanding into politics. Success is the important thing. Propaganda is not a matter for average minds, but rather a matter for practitioners. It is not supposed to be lovely or theoretically correct. . . . That is a matter of practice, not of theory. . . .Propaganda should be popular, not intellectually pleasing. It is not the task of propaganda to discover intellectual truths. J.G.
