It is not fun to run for public office these days. As someone who tries to be a thoughtful progressive voice in the legislature, I find myself demonized and under attack for my principled position I take on issues. Money in the shadows funds character assassination and distortion of my record. The nastiness that dominates campaigns for federal office is replicated at the state and local level. Four years ago I lost my House seat by 86 votes, swept out of office by the John Sununu–led Republican campaign that resulted in the Tea Party seizing control over the New Hampshire Legislature. I don’t want that to happen again. “Citizens United” changed elections in this country and the money that is being dumped into state representative races by the Koch brothers is corrosive and terrifying.
