I have no faith in humanity. I do not believe that as a species we are worth saving as we are. I do however believe in the potential of humanity. I know that countless individuals over the course of centuries upon centuries look up at the stars and wanted to reach them. Generation after generation these rare people kept standing atop each others shoulders, passing information and discoveries and philosophies onto the next until the day that a human being crossed beyond the scope of our atmosphere. I believe in that. The curiosity and the hunger for knowledge and advancement both enthralls and terrifies me. It is an awesome thing, knowledge, and in the wrong hands it can do incomprehensible damage to everything and everyone. Unfortunately for you and I, our species is exactly the wrong hands, for there will always be a common denominator to all of the most horrific and grotesque atrocities that have been committed throughout the recurring cycles of the annals of human history, and that is human nature. Every government on the planet could be torn down, brick by brick, and rebuilt by only the kindest, most intelligent, and the most well-meaning individuals that we could find among the over 6 billion people that cling to this Earth...but in a few generations it would mean nothing. This is because people die, and people remember little of the learned experiences, mistakes, and the few successes of their predecessors. It is like the Telephone Game, AKA Chinese Whispers; one passes a message to a friend, who then in turn passes on that message and so on and so forth, what is found at the end is often vastly different from what began. This truth permeates throughout our history. The advancements in technology and science amaze and astound me, they fill me with fascination, and they also fill me with a sense of the deepest dread. There is a darkness in this world, an evil to be sure; but it is not coming for you, or for your friends or loved ones...because it has them already, and it has had them for quite some time. We all are so wrapped up in our distractions, so concerned about our jobs, and debts, and schooling, that we miss what is in front of us. When we turn on the television, when we hear the news, when you surf facebook and think that what you speak and say is your own design. It is not your design. You have been designed, manipulated, herded like sheep, and so have I. It is all around us, hidden blatantly in front of our faces for so long that we have never known it for what it is. There was a time when I would not have posted this, when I would have thought it too controversial, when I cared far too much about what others thought of my actions as opposed to what I thought of them. But hey, we all have to grow up sometime. Are you smart enough to feel stupid? Because this is the story of all of us, of the human race. I applaud you if you read this entire rant, and I am impressed if you managed not to scoff. A year or two ago I would have.
