I have noticed the increasing prevalence of a kind of intellectual even more annoying than the spiritual but not religious types: I mean the sort who, without believing in any religion, nonetheless loudly maintains that religion is somehow salutary, or even necessary, for the health of society. One can respect--and therefore argue with--someone who believes that the tenets of Christianity, or Islam, or any other religion, are, as a matter of fact, rigorously and precisely true. But one can have nothing but contempt for those who evidently wish others to believe something that they themselves consider false. Notice how much they despise the majority of people: For these types seem to assume that their *own* lives are going well enough & and that they manage, somehow, not to murder too many people each day before lunch; but its the other, inferior sort of people who allegedly need religion.
