I have permission to share this letter that Zach Wyatt wrote to - TopicsExpress

I have permission to share this letter that Zach Wyatt wrote to the city council. ---- It has taken some time for me to write this letter to you, and for the past couple of weeks I could not figure out why. I kept blaming it on my rigorous class schedule, but today I have came to terms with it. It has been because of my irritation and dissatisfaction with the Kirksville City Council is why it took me so long to write this letter. The decision that the Kirksville City Council came to this month on the Human Rights Commission, I believe, was the worse decision that this elected body could have ever done for the city of Kirksville. I find it thought-provoking where in a town that has a motto of “Where the people make a difference”, the City Council this month clearly stated that only “SOME” people make a difference in this town. To allow legal discrimination to take place is one of the most asinine things that I have ever heard of in the 21st century. I want to take a moment and thank the two courageous and forward thinking council members that voted for the ordinance; Jerry Mills and Glen Moritz. Theses two members deserve to be re-elected, and one of them needs to replace Mayor Detwiler, who truly does not grasp the knowledge on how to represent the people. As you know this issue is not a Republican or Democrat issue. I was happy to see Representative Nate Walker and former Representative Rebecca McClanahan both at the Council meeting speaking in favor of this ordinance. Human Rights should never be a partisan issue, though to my surprise the council did not stand on the right side of history. As for Councilman saying that this ordinance leads to marriage equality, let me just say if it were that easy, marriage equality would have been in effect long ago. Then millions of you taxpayer dollars would not have just been spent by my national party to defend DOMA, which was just found to be unconstitutional, which was signed into law by a Democrat. So, what I am trying to advocate to you here is not to wade into marriage equality when it comes to this ordinance. I hope that the council takes up this ordinance yet again, and passes a workplace non-discrimination ordinance in Kirksville. We need to set an example as grown ups for our community’s youth. If we continue to promote discrimination within our community we are doing a great disservice to them if they decided to head out into other communities. That in-turn reflects poorly on us as a community. We cannot continue down the road of promoting discrimination in this community, and I ask that the City Council realize that they step back, and think why they were elected to office. I, as is many are in the community, am very proud to say that I am from Northeast Missouri. The Heartland of America! I know that deep in the hearts of every community member they do not want to see anyone discriminated against anywhere. So, I encourage the Kirksville City Council to the right thing and pass this ordinance to help end workplace discrimination. Zach Wyatt
