I have read on facebook what it means to retire. It seems that the perfect retirement for many involves spending half your time fishing and the other half sitting on the porch watching the world go by. When I was a child there was only one man that I knew who actually retired. He worked in a steel mill in Kansas City. He decided to come to Mississippi and play golf with other people in our state who were living on a pension but found very few friends like himself. The people I know all just kept working until they either died or were put in the old folks home. They slowed down a little. I know some who went from large truck farms to large family gardens. They culled their cattle herds from several hundred to a few dozen but never actually stopped. The ones who had been in factories still kept doing something to keep going. I am a full time retail merchant and hope some day to sell this store. I will go fishing once in a while but will never just watch the world pass by the porch. I dream of trading my full time business for several other jobs. I already teach Sunday School but really wish I had time to devote to more Christian work. I always have some sort of garden. Lately I have been reduced to just watering my brothers tomato in a pot. I want a real garden and maybe a few yard birds too. I keep hearing the urge to write a book and I suppose that will be one of my jobs. I do not know if it will ever happen, but yes I still want that job where I work a few months during sessions of the legislature and come in from time to time for special sessions. Am I dreaming or what?
