I have read this communication and can only say, as someone who was involved in the process over a long time, that it is not accurate and is very one-sided. Furthermore some of my own words are quoted in this article and are given completely out of context. This cannot be acceptable. The draft agreement was shared with a number of people including well respected people working with primates right here in South Africa and not one of them had an issue with it. The Memorandum of Understanding referred to was a draft one page document that contained almost nothing of substance and was never completed nor was it signed by any of the parties, so it is misleading to refer to it as a formal document that would underpin a partnership involving an expensive property and other assets such as vehicles that were donated. It continues to be unacceptable to me that Save The Primates is slandered in public in this manner when they have made significant personal sacrifices and a huge contribution to the primates of South Africa. The fact that the project has not progressed as hoped certainly cannot be blamed on their actions in any way at all. The actions of the DPG in this matter are hard to comprehend but more importantly have done significant damage to the cause of primate welfare and fundraising for animals across the spectrum. This should be cause for concern for the many people who continue to do sterling work in challenging circumstances.
