I have really been enjoying Ken Burns newest documentary on the Roosevelts. Just like President Obama, FDR entered the Presidency with the nation in economic crisis - partially the result of the vast inequality of wealth just before the Wall Street Crash of 1929. As we know, FDR took an activist approach, one that would put people back to work, but also make a solid improvement in the nations infrastructure. It wasnt long before almost every community in the country began seeing the benefits of the New Deal. Schools, libraries, hospitals, highways, sidewalks, sewers, dams and parks were all constructed by workers who were glad to get a paycheck and to help America get out of its difficulties. As we face an economic imbalance just as great as that faced by FDR, we might consider the value of letting the government actually do something useful for a change - investing in the people and resources of the United States on the same scale as Roosevelt did.
