I have recently got hold of a copy of the Scofield Reference Bible. This famously advocates the gap theory, which suggests a period of time existed between the events of Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. This theory is supported by the fact that the Hebrew word for was (hayah) can also be translated became -- thus Genesis 1:2 might be read: and the earth became without form and void. There is much controversy surrounding this theory, but certain other Scriptures are alluded to that may offer it support, most notably Jeremiah 4:24-26, which infer a pre-Adamic world that existed and was laid waste in the period between the first two verses of Genesis 1. Might the theory be true? Could it be, as proponents claim, that it is in this gap that the dinosaurs lived and died? We cannot say for sure this side of eternity, but it is only a fascinating side issue. It has no bearing upon the fact of the worlds need of Christ. That in Adam all die, and one day we must all give an account for our lives, when only saving faith in the Son of God who loved us and have Himself for us will save us from certain judgment.
