I have refrained from making political/civil statements for quite some time, but the whole #cancelcolbert trend has me kinda angry. Some background for those of you who dont know: Colbert tweeted, “I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever,” parodying the Washington Redskins owners launch of the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation which was created to lighten up the debacle over the whole insensitive team name ordeal. Fans and non-fans alike have been freaking out, stating that he is a racist bigot, the White Devil, etc. Anyway. First of all, the Colbert Show airs on Comedy Central. Everyone and their mother knows that any material airing on that particular network is already almost guaranteed to have profanity, uncomfortable dialogue, etc. I am willing to bet that almost every show on CC has said something either stereotypical or racist this week, not to aim for poor taste or to attack any race, but in the name of comedy and satire. Was what he said racist? I can definitely agree that Colbert brought up a common stereotype. Do I think it was out of line on a TV-14 comedy news show that isnt intended for children? No way at all. Even though his show primarily focuses on politics, Colbert is consistently making fun of them, not cramming his political beliefs down your throat for 22 mins a night. These bashers fail to understand that he is primarily here to make us laugh, not to educate us in political/current affairs. I could also argue the whole Freedom of Speech thing, but that is already a textbook topic, so theres no point in fighting that. Freedom of Speech also isnt the topic at hand. Overall, I hope CC stays true to their mission of broadcasting hilarious programs for the not-so-sensitive audience. Stephen Colbert, if there is any faith left in humanity, should not be in deep water, and shouldnt be ridiculed for making a joke on his joke show. Personally, I find the joke he said to be entirely relevant and hilarious. If Nick Cannon can make fun of white people with his new album and make up (I also find it entertaining/unoffensive), Colbert should be able to make his jokes on his own show. #endrant
