I have seen articles written about how fiction creates empathy in others but I had never bothered to read those articles. Reading fiction can help others become more compassionate in regards to sitting in someones shoes without having to actually experience the actual situation. A life teacher about pain and suffering, why people kill and harm others, and what makes humans tick. Its akin to a backdoor way of accessing knowledge. As we all know it is easy to accrue facts and figures; its easy to memorize; its a lot harder to get people to think for themselves, however. And in my personal experiences back when I was a teenager, I felt literature helped me learn to think. It aids our left-brained conditioned world to use their right brain more in enhancing imagination through books instead of watching a movie and having a screen do the work for us (not that theres anything wrong with that - I love movies!), we are forced to imagine the characters, the scenery, and we are also led to independence to interpret the metaphors. I have a romantic relationship with literature being a romantic, passionate person myself! One reason I want to get back into it is because I feel I have lost a lot of my ability to use my imagination. And I love leaving this world and traveling to other worlds, other countries, other times, and other cultures! And since Pride and Prejudice was written in the early 1800s and written by a British author, all the more Exciting!! Its intoxicating to hear how people spoke back then and being an American, its mind-expanding to see where some roots of English can be had aside from Shakespeare himself. (Yes, much of the words we use today are Shakespearean!) So, I decided to read that book even though I already know the ending. Excerpts from the below TED talk that I enjoyed: Reading fiction literature enhances our ability to read other peoples thoughts and actions. We read to know were not alone. Reading gives us permission to own our humanity. Reading gives us validation and tells us its okay to feel and think and experience what were going through. And if we find the courage, reading can give us direction. I once made a status update last summer that there is a lot of falsehood in non-fiction and a lot of truth in fiction. I still believe that to be very true albeit those books (even though not gospel) that I read regarding Health did save my life. Thank you, again, for this Lily!!! youtu.be/QJFLy_vTFA8
