I have seen but a few elf owls in my park. Theyre not much taller than a house sparrow and theyll readily take up residence in a pecked-out hole inside a saguaro. I hear them every now and then during our night hikes. However, an untrained ear only listens to the shuffle of shoes on the dirt trail. Spotlighting along the foothills is sometimes enough to get the eyeshine or the ocassional spooked owl to fly the coup. I dont spotlight to scare up birds.
