I have seen it has become practice by some artists to put a coin next to a freshly done tattoo to indicate the size of the tattoo. This is a real dangerous practice as potentially pathogenic bacteria are commonly found on coins. Among those isolated in a University experiment are: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Serratia, Enterobacter, Salmonella, Acinetobacter, Enterococci, Staphylococcus and Bacillus cereus. The following fungi were also found: Penicillium spp, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium, Rhizopus, Altenaria spp, Candida spp and Cryptococcus were isolated. Coins harbour potentially pathogenic bacteria and fungi that may pose a serious infection risk to the person that just got the tattoo.
