I have seen the following statement quite often on FB in the last few months: We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals. Well no, you cant, really. All you can say is that men and women who treat animals well treat animals well. Thats basically it. Among these people good to animals will be generous and stingy ones, gentle lovers and wife-beaters, humanists liberals and racists conservatives, and every possible kind of human being from self-loathing neurotic human haters to the most gentle loving soul. History and experience should have shown people that being kind to animals does not necessary preclude any other qualities but that it does not entail them either.
