I have some sad news. Dudley didnt wake up this morning. I went to give him his food and he didnt come running like usual. When I looked in his bed he looked asleep and peaceful so he must of died in his sleep. Last night everything was normal; I took him to the pub and had pork scratchings. he cuddled me and Cathy on the sofa, stole food from the kitchen and dug up some flowers; all very normal behavior for him. He drank water fine and had half a bowl of water left in the morning. The vet said it is unusual for dogs to die so peacefully but said for a dog of his breed and age it could be a heart attack, or more likely a a hemorrhaged tumor (most likely in his liver) which would cause a quick death. This is really sad for all of us; he has been such a big part of the wider community in every aspect of his life. Even people who dont like dogs tended to warm to our gentle giant. We will all deal with this in different ways, but the most important thing to remember is that he had a fantastic life with a lot of care, attention, food, exercise and cuddles. With Cathy, Wilf and I having a new baby joining the family in January we probably wont get a new dog right away, but this is definitely a slot in our life that we will look to fill in the future.
