I have started working on my next published research paper entitled Emerging Oil Industry Challenges in Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret Belize. I am aiming to present this at an Energy Challenges and Mechanisms Symposium in Aberdeen in July 2014 - if it is accepted as a keynote speech. Tourism is still Belizes most important industry and No.1 foreign currency earner. Oil used to be Belizes second largest money earner but recent declines may have changed that. A sneak preview of Belize’s 2013 Tourism Statistics makes interesting reading. Very close to 1 million tourists visited Belize in 2013. In 2013: - 70% of Belize’s tourists were cruise ship passengers (30% are overnight tourists) - 76% of the overnight tourists arrived by air - 79% of the overnight tourists stayed on Ambergris Caye (47%), Caye Caulker (24%) or another island - 15% of overnight tourists visited Placencia - 62% of overnight tourists were from the USA (11% from Europe, 9% from Canada) This is a follow-up paper to the ones I published earlier with Audrey Matura-Shepherd (in 2011) and Andres Cisneros-Mayor et al. (in 2013). This time Tanya Williams, Executive Director of the Belize Coalition to Save Our Natural Heritage will be my co-author.
