I have this post on avoiding subplots taking over the main plot. It’s about romance, but with some tweaks much of it can be applied to many topics. When it comes to writing characters like this, you’ve probably heard someone say something like “your character is more than their X”. This means a number of things: X should not be mentioned in every scene that your character is involved in. Since it’s not a focal part of the story, your character should still have a spot in the main plot without it being directly related to whatever X is. Your character should have thoughts, dialogue, and internal conflict that are not related to X. Other characters should have thoughts, dialogue, and feelings towards this character that are not related to X. If X is a subplot (rather than something that just happens to exist), it should affect your character and their role in the main plot, not just the subplot scenes. Subplots are not parallel universes. However, X should not be totally ignored and neglected. It will affect your character in many ways. write, writer, writes, writing, blog, blogs, quote, quotes, book, books, writing advice, advice, advice for writers, writing inspiration, inspiration, inspiration for writers
