I have to agree with this headline. Even if you dislike guns and dont think that people should have them in their homes, applauding the message contained in this PSA seems pretty irresponsible. The kid steals his mothers gun (which is what Adam Lanza did) and then...takes it to school. He steals his mothers gun and then takes it to school where he carries it around in his bag through at least one class. Then he gets up at the end of class, in no hurry (end of the day?), and just whips it out and tosses it on his terrified teachers desk, pleading with her to Take it away because he doesnt feel safe with a gun in his house. In the real world, it would have been about that time when the school went into lock down, parents freaked out that they couldnt pick up their kids, the police were called, and the kid was arrested and then expelled. Not to mention the inevitable media frenzy about how this kid got a gun into school and carried it around. A few thoughts. The kid keeps his finger straight and off the trigger while handling the gun, indicating that he has some familiarity with weapon safety. People whove never handled guns almost always instinctively place their finger on the trigger. The teacher to student ratio in his school is pretty dang good. And more importantly, the kid (filmmaker) clearly doesnt see the disconnect - he feel unsafe by the mere presence of a gun in his home, which suggests that the mere presence of a gun is inherently unsafe. If thats the case, then he put his classmates in grave danger by bringing it to school and having it in his bag. Imagine how unsafe all those kids will feel once this kid gets expelled for what he did. But since no one actually died or was even aware that he had it, perhaps the message is that the mere presence of a gun isnt what makes people unsafe; its the malicious intent and/or unsafe use behind those who wield them. This is easily among the poorest constructed messages, from theft to violating school rules to inevitably being expelled in real life to poor logic overall, that Ive ever seen in a PSA.
