I have to come to a point of realization about my obsession of being an agriculture practitioner! Agriculture is obviously the way of life! You have a lot of fun out in the field and it continues while you at the dining table. As an Agronomist, you certainly know what know about the production and management of field crops, and you are very much closely related to the Horticulturist who is more specialized in the production of flowers, fruits and vegetables, especially under greenhouse conditions. What about the soil scientist, my mostly admired field, you play a critical role in telling us what we can grow in the soil or soil-less media. The soil scientist prove us information about the nature and property of soils, which provide the media for the cultivation of plants and crops. Now, there we have come - plant and crops, what is the difference? Well, the difference basically is that crops are intentional cultivate/grown for a purpose! The soil scientists help us in determining the what nutrient elements are required in the soil for the growth of healthy crops/plants, water usage of our crops, improvement of the soil among others functions. If you are to grown a crops, then the soil scientist must first be contacted before you make any move in investing into agriculture, which is a business. Imagine what the world will be without plant and animal breeders/biotechnologists in the wake of the increasing need to make the world food and nutritionally secured in this age and ages to come. In the wake of the devastation of the effect of climate change, the agro-ecologists and agro-climatologists play a crucial role. As agriculturists, we are very much interested in the environment in which we grow and rear our crops and animals, respectively. The reasons are obvious, the weather/climatic factors - temperature, light, humidity, vapor pressure/density, relative humidity, rainfall, sunshine, cloud formation and host of others interact with our crops and animals in a number of ways. As entomologist, pathologist, weed scientists, biotechnologist, molecular biologists, crop physiologists, veterinarians, parasitologists, etc, our task relates to protecting our crops and animals. There are room for engineers to radicalized their expertise as irrigation and mechanical engineers and post-harvest technologists. There is an economics and marketing side of agriculture. So the agriculture economics and agri-business professional have a say in agriculture. Expertise in agro-forestry, land and water use experts, farm management, agriculture extension and advisory services, home economics, food storage and processing, business and financial management and many more have a significant part to play in making our world food and nutrition secured. My obsession about agriculture is without doubt as reason of the many opportunities that agriculture offers the world. The is huge prospect of being a wealth-maker, I mean financial security! For the rural-poor in the developing country, agriculture is the way to eliminating poverty, and this is the reason why I love being an agriculture scientist! I wish to invite a number of young and smart guys to join this campaign of making our world a hunger-free place to live. It is surely a high task but it is possible for us all, black and white in this world, to have three/four nutritional meals on our tables per day. Agriculture gives me more money and energy to walk and work!
